چکیده

Hemicelluloses dissolved in the pre-hydrolysis liquor (PHL) of kraftbased dissolving pulping processes can potentially be used to produce high value-added products such as fuel ethanol and xylitol. However, the isolation of lignin in PHL is a problem that remains unsolved and obstructs the utilization of those parts of hemicelluloses. Based on the principle of lignin isolation by acidification, the feasibility of using polyethylene oxide (PEO) to enhance the removal of lignin from PHL was tested in this work. The formation of lignin/PEO complexes was confirmed by means of turbidity, particle size, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The removal rate is affected by lignin content, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and decolorizing, and the results show that sulfuric acid acidification or PEO flocculation alone do not have an obvious effect on lignin removal from PHL. However, a much higher removal rate, compared to 2.81% (only acidification at pH 2) and 1.2% (only PEO on original PHL), of 22.75% is obtained by the sequential process of acidification and addition of PEO (pH 2 and PEO 350 mg/L in PHL).

Separation and Structural Characteristics of Lignin in the Prehydrolysis Liquor of Whangee Dissolving Pulp

Separation and structural characterization of lignin are essential for valueadded utilization of hemicelluloses and lignin in the prehydrolysis liquor (PHL) of a kraft-based Whangee (a genus of bamboo) dissolving pulp production. In this work, lignin in the PHL was separated by acidification treatment (AT) and rotary vacuum evaporation treatment (RVET), and the separated crude lignin was then c...

An Update on Sulfite Pretreatment (sporl) of Lignocellulosic Biomass for Effective Production of Cellulose Ethanol

SPORL (Sulfite Pretreatment to Overcome Recalcitrance of Lignocellulose) has been demonstrated as an effective and robust pretreatment technology for ethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass, in particular woody biomass. The process consists of a short chemical treatment of feedstock with sulfite followed by mechanical size reduction (fiberization) with disk mill. Studies indicated that ...

The Hitac-process (high Temperature Adsorption on Activated Charcoal) New Possibilities in Autohydrolysate Treatment

Water prehydrolysis of wood is an interesting process for the recovery of xylooligosaccharides and derivatives thereof, while at the same time cellulose is preserved to a large extent for subsequent dissolving pulp production. The recovery of value-added products out of autohydrolysates is frequently hindered by extensive lignin precipitation, especially at high temperatures. In this study, a n...

Effect of Liquid to Solid Ratio on Autohydrolysis of Eucalyptus globulus Wood Meal

Autohydrolysis of Eucalyptus globulus both with and without the addition of 5 g/L formic acid was explored for different liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratios at 150 oC for 100 min. The L/S ratio has an impact on the dissolution of wood components during prehydrolysis. The extraction yield of wood components other than lignin decreased with increasing L/S ratio, while lignin removal increased with incre...

Lignin Prepared by Ultrafiltration of Black Liquor: Investigation of Solubility, Viscosity, and Ash Content

Technical lignin, which can be potentially obtained in large amounts as a by-product from kraft pulping, represents a potential resource for manufacturing fuels and chemicals. Upgrading of lignin, by lowering its molecular weight, is a valuable alternative to precipitation from black liquor, which occurs in the Lignoboost process. The solubility properties of Lignoboost lignin and filtered lign...
